uh oh

You’ve found your way to Callum Booth’s website. My website. You are very, very welcome.

So yeah, I’m a novelist, journalist, and presenter.

I do a range of other media-y things too — and you can find out all about those by scrolling down.

Currently, I’m pitching out my debut novel, MUMBLEBROOK, so if you’re an agent… say hi?

But maybe you’re like, “I’m not an agent, but I want to work with this Callum fella, what do I do?”

Then, pal, the contact page is your friend.

And if you are none of those things and just want to drop me a message anyway? You know what to do.

still here? great, there’s more

  • The main focus of my reporting has been on technology and music.

Since 2018, I’ve written and edited articles for The Next Web, a Financial Times company. This ranges from breaking news and product reviews, to satirical and data-driven pieces.

Personal highlights? Well, I’m proud of this in-depth feature on the safety of Apple’s AirTags. I also broke and got the scoop on the CryptoLand story — and was subsequently cited in the FT, VICE, and many more.

Another article I’m fond of is this exploration of GPUs being stolen from display computers at electronic stores.

Beyond this, I wrote a piece about rappers selling their mixtapes on the street for NOISEY, and a range of music news, criticism, and recommendations for Crack in the Road.

  • You like podcasts? Same, pal, same.

I’ve been the co-host of a literary podcast called Smug Book Club for several years. I also edited and produced the show for the majority of its lifespan, but have now passed that baton on.

If you’d like to check Smug Book Club out, I’d recommend our episodes on Twilight and Dune. Another good place to start is us rounding up the best books we read in 2020.

And if that’s STILL not enough? You can find Smug Book Club on all major platforms (including Spotify and Apple Podcasts). Aren’t you lucky?

I’ve also been involved with other podcasts. I hosted a show called called Forensic Finance, a project undertaken in partnership with ABN AMRO.

In it, we explored topics of how financial institutions detect money laundering and how data is being used to stop modern slavery.

Pretty interesting stuff, if I say so myself. Which I do.

  • I’ve been conceptualising, scripting, and hosting technology-focused videos for several years now. And, damn, it’s good.

If I had to talk about my favourite productions (and I guess I do), this piece about why you should care about CDs comes to mind.

And yes, I’m still a fan of CDs.

Other videos I’m proud of include this one encouraging (and explaining why) people need a pair of open-back, planar magnetic headphones in their lives.

This review of the Sonos Roam portable Bluetooth speaker is another favourite. I can say for certain that no one covered it like I did.

Beyond these editorial-centric videos, I’ve also presented a project with one of the Netherlands’ leading banks about the future of finance.

The episodes found me travelling the country and speaking with a range of experts about topics as diverse as self-healing security software and whether big tech will replace traditional banks.

  • MMA is a passion of mine and I’m lucky enough to commentate for an Amsterdam-based promotion called LFL, or Levels Fight League.

You can watch short clips of my commentary on Instagram, but if you’d like to hear the full thing, there are plenty of free fights on YouTube, including me calling ex-UFC fighter Tom Breese’s middleweight title win.

God, that was a good fight.

On top of commentary, I’ve got a storied resume of hosting, moderating, and interviewing — in front of both cameras and crowds.

For over six years, I’ve presented, arbitrated discussions, and chatted with people at a diverse range of tech-adjacent events. This includes TNW Conference, International Systems Expo (ISE), the AR & VR Summit, and Accenture’s Forward / Cloud event.

The topics I’ve covered are, well, pretty damn varied.

They ranged from inclusive design to understanding cybercriminal psychology, from how retail businesses battled the pandemic to the evolution of the workspace — and everything in-between.

Throughout my time, I’ve shared the stage and spoken with brilliant people from a huge number of companies.

If you’re ready for a big-ass list, this includes: Nike, Philips, NASA, Volkswagen, Oatly, IBM, Hyperloop, BBC, Trinny London, Ahold Delaize, Daily Motion, ABN AMRO, Vox, Boiler Room, Avast Software, VanMoof, Unity, Wikipedia, and many more.

And yes, thanks for asking, I am available for work.
